PAY RATE: $12.00/hr

Camp Activities will lead basic programming for groups, retreats and special events. Programming could include any of the following but is not limited to: shooting sports, canoeing, zip lines, arena rides, team-building and nature education activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Serve as role model to members, and Y staff and, at all times live the mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement.
  2. Ensure a positive experience is had by all participants, encouraging engagement activities and demonstrating the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
  3. Teach outdoor recreational activities to youth/adult groups. Outline all rules, core tactics, and accompanying expectations.
  4. Assist with setup and cleanup for special events, weddings and programs held at Camp Abe Lincoln.
  5. Work to insure the safety of every individual on camp property.
  6. Ensure that every program actively participates and teaches others about Leave No Trace camping.
  7. Able to work with difficult and problematic children effectively and safely.
  8. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with various groups and committees, including parents, community leaders and groups, schools, service groups, government officials, etc.
  9. Make decisions related to the welfare, health and safety of all campers and staff. Maintain and enforce all policies and procedures, including those related to ACA standards.
  10. Ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance of equipment and facilities is adhered to and report needed repairs promptly to the Branch Executive.
  11. Participate in and solicit others to participate in necessary YMCA financial development efforts, specifically the Annual Campaign.
  12. Maintain certifications listed under Certificates and Other Requirements.
  13. Adherence to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley.
  14. Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment.
  15. Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
  16. All other duties as assigned by the Branch Executive.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalence
  2. No previous experience required, but is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be able to pass background check
  2. CPR/First Aid/AED certification*
  3. Mandatory Reporter*
  4. Certain program areas require specific trainings provided by camp. In order to lead those program areas, training by a trained camp staff member is necessary.

*Note: The * noted certification training programs are provided by the YMCA staff and must be obtained within 30 days of hire, if not currently certified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee need to handle endurance activities, including prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will experience daily exposure to outdoor conditions which will vary depending upon the weather, including but not limited to, sun, heat, humidity, rain, cold, snow, etc. Must be able to handle regular exposure to outdoor plants and animals such as poison ivy/oak, bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
